Fuel, charging, or both? What moves the car, and what does the badge mean? Explore the systems found in BMWs, from conventional engines to electric drive.
A petrol or diesel engine drives the car through its gearbox and drivetrain. This category has no electric motor assisting propulsion. Start-stop or energy recovery alone does not automatically make a car a hybrid. [13][10]

02 / MHEV
Mild hybrid
Electric assistance for the engine
A smaller electrical system assists the petrol or diesel engine and recovers energy during deceleration. Modern BMW systems typically use 48 volts. There is no external charging socket; the system works in the background. [1][2][4]
BMW exampleBMW X6 xDrive40i · 2023
Systems differ: the 2023 X6 xDrive40i can move on electric power at very low speeds. This is not plug-in-style electric range.
03 / HEV
Full hybrid
Hybrid without plugging in
Alongside the petrol engine, the electric motor can move the car independently in certain situations. The battery recharges while driving, including under braking. There is no external charging socket. The earlier BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is an example. [3][4]
BMW exampleBMW ActiveHybrid 3 · 2012
ActiveHybrid does not always mean full hybrid: the 2009 V8 ActiveHybrid 7 was a mild hybrid with a 120-volt system.
04 / PHEV
Plug-in hybrid
Fuel it and charge it
A petrol engine and electric drive share a battery that can also be charged externally. Many everyday journeys can be electric; the petrol engine can take over on longer trips. Regular plugging in is needed to make full use of electric driving. [1][14][15]

Range and charging capability vary by generation. Temperature, battery charge and power demand may start the petrol engine even when electric mode is selected.
05 / BEV
Battery electric
Electric drive, no fuel tank
Only electric motors drive the wheels. There is no petrol or diesel engine: energy comes from external charging, with some recovered during deceleration. A high-voltage battery stores the energy for driving. [5]

Regeneration can extend range but cannot replace charging. Speed, weather and heating also affect range.
06 / REx
Range-extended electric
The petrol engine generates electricity
The original BMW i3 REx uses a small petrol engine to run a generator. It produces electricity while the electric motor still drives the wheels; the petrol engine has no direct mechanical drive to them. External charging supports everyday electric use. [6]

Hydrogen fuel cell
Hydrogen to electricity to motion
A fuel cell produces electricity from hydrogen stored in tanks and oxygen from the air. It supplies the electric drive, with a battery also in the system. You refuel with hydrogen while an electric motor moves the car. [7]

Decoding the badges
Badges are useful clues, but the exact model and year matter together.
330e / 530e
Modern numbered e models are plug-in hybrids, so a plain e is not a separate hybrid category. Conversely, the plug-in hybrid XM has no e suffix. [1][9]
eDrive
BMW's name for its electric drive technology, used in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars. [8]
320i / 320d · i4 / i5
The traditional i suffix indicates petrol and d indicates diesel; either may still be mild hybrid. The initial i in i4/i5 denotes electric models. Both the letter's position and the era matter. [9][2][5]
xDrive / sDrive
xDrive means all-wheel drive. sDrive means one driven axle, front or rear depending on the model. Neither tells you whether the car is petrol, hybrid or electric. [8][9]
BMW i8 / i3 REx
An initial i alone does not prove battery-only propulsion. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid, and the original i3 REx also had a petrol range extender. [11][6]
325e / 525e · eta
A historical exception: the old 325e and 525e were petrol models. Their e came from eta, the symbol for efficiency. They were not plug-in hybrids. [10]

Common questions
What is regeneration?
During deceleration, the electric motor can act as a generator, converting some kinetic energy into electricity stored in the battery. It neither creates unlimited new energy nor recovers everything used. [5][3]
Does a plug-in hybrid stop when electric range runs out?
In normal operation, with petrol available, the combustion engine lets you continue. Zero displayed electric range does not switch off the entire hybrid system: energy recovery and electric assistance may still work. [1]
So does a plug-in hybrid need charging at all?
It can be driven without plugging in, but external charging enables regular electric driving. Regenerative braking alone is not equivalent to starting with a charged battery. [1]
Do all BMW hybrids have the same electric range?
No. The powertrain category matters first, then the model, battery and year. Official test values can differ from everyday range; speed, temperature, heating and air conditioning all matter. [1][5]
Does every hydrogen BMW use a fuel cell?
No. The earlier limited-series BMW Hydrogen 7 burned hydrogen or petrol in a combustion engine. The iX5 Hydrogen works differently: its fuel cell generates electricity and an electric motor drives the wheels. [12][7]
What does this mean for the gearbox?
The ActiveHybrid 3 and several BMW plug-in hybrids integrate the electric motor with the automatic transmission. Other layouts also exist. Battery-electric BMWs generally use a single-speed transmission. A powertrain label alone does not identify a gearbox code, fluid specification or interchangeability. [3][2][5]
Examples refer to the named models and periods. Historic and development vehicles are not a list of cars currently available in Hungary. The actual vehicle's manual and factory data determine its capabilities.
