ZF 4HP22
ZF 4HP22: Excel reference ratios, torque and fluid data for a 4-speed transmission. Manufacturer verification of family data is not yet complete.
The technical figures apply at transmission-family level and have not yet been fully verified against manufacturer sources. Identify the exact version using the full manufacturer identifier.
This database is the result of research carried out by Six-In-Line Kft. in its spare time.
Excel assigns A4S 310R / A4S 270R to this ZF family. BMW’s service bulletin lists them as GM THM-R1 transmissions. The incorrect cross-reference is excluded from the BMW code field and search.

Fluid data
- 4HP 22 (nagy motor): ATF Dexron III
- 4HP 22 (kis motor): ATF Dexron III
The fluid name from Excel is not a manufacturer approval. Select fluid using the full transmission identifier and current ZF/BMW requirements. “Lifetime” alone is not a fluid specification.
ZF fluids and oil change kitsZF identification
Record the full marking on the transmission housing. ZF’s guide shows both plate and stamped identification variants.
- Type designation
- The exact type shown on the plate, including every suffix.
- Full ZF catalogue number
- Catalog Number / bill-of-materials number. The full number is required to identify parts.
- Serial number
- Serial Number. Identifies the individual unit; not the same as the transmission family code.
- BMW / OE markings
- Manufacturer part numbers and other codes on the plate. Available fields vary by version.
The prefix is not a complete order number and does not by itself confirm compatibility of the specific version.
Label colour, casting marks and a suffix alone are insufficient for full identification. We do not use Excel’s general “X and Z = all-wheel drive” statement to identify the drivetrain.
ZF manufacturer identification guide (Transmission ID Charts, PDF page 3)Documented European applications (0)
F21, F22, F23, F30, F31, F36, F80, F87, G30 and F90 fitments come from research carried out by Six-In-Line Kft. in its spare time. Additional manufacturer sources and discrepancies are shown beside each result.
No verified European vehicle pairing is recorded for this type yet. This does not mean it was not used in BMWs.
