MATERIAL SELECTION / ENGINE OIL

Genuine BMW engine oil.
A considered change interval.

We use only genuine BMW engine oil. We choose the oil to match the engine’s specifications and consider usage conditions when deciding when to change it.

Why genuine BMW engine oil?

Six-In-Line Kft. deliberately uses only genuine BMW engine oil. We always choose the appropriate oil based on the BMW approval and viscosity specified for the engine .

The engine’s requirements and the lubricant’s properties must match. Viscosity alone does not describe every property of an oil: suitable additives, wear protection and compatibility with the vehicle’s systems also matter.

Genuine BMW engine oils are developed for BMW engines’ requirements. They support lubrication after cold starts, maintain a suitable oil film, reduce friction and wear, and help keep the engine clean and protected from corrosion. [1]

The photo shows the oil used for a particular service. BMW Longlife-04 / SAE 5W-30 is not suitable for every BMW engine.

We also consider the exhaust aftertreatment system

Oil composition can also affect the catalytic converter and particulate filter. Choosing the correct oil category can help protect exhaust aftertreatment and support fuel efficiency. The specific engine’s requirements are therefore always the starting point. [2]

Why must even high-quality oil be changed?

During use, combustion residues, moisture and fuel can enter the oil while its additives gradually lose effectiveness. Changing it removes used oil and much of the contamination. Frequent short trips and cold starts make usage patterns especially important. [3]

Six-In-Line’s oil change recommendation

12 000–15 000 kmOur general workshop recommendation for engine oil and filter changes.

This is Six-In-Line Kft.’s own maintenance recommendation. We adapt it to the way the vehicle is used, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions or CBS indication if they call for an earlier change. We consider elapsed time as well as mileage.

BMW Longlife refers to an oil approval; it does not by itself define one interval for every vehicle and use. Service timing must also be assessed using the specific vehicle’s requirements and service indication. [1], [3], [4]

Our experience with more frequent changes

In our internal assessments, we have had positive experience with a 7,000 km change interval . When defining our general recommendation, we weigh engine protection against running costs and the extra materials used by more frequent changes.

We therefore see 12,000–15,000 kilometres as a reasonable practical compromise. The maintenance plan is always based on the individual car and its use.

The oil filter and final checks are part of the job

We use genuine BMW, MAHLE or MANN-FILTER filters. The oil and filter are recorded on the work order, and we check oil level, leaks and operation afterwards. The maintenance is documented in BMW’s service history and SIL’s vehicle records.
